This passage...

"But I think, like us, the Elves never completely rise above and beyond the influences of the immediacy of physical and emotional responses. ... To live in this unique form, which is the human body, is to remain human."

... really sums up the way I see the Elves. I agree with you that upon reading the Silmarillion, the Elves become very real in a human sense, but that for a Third Age Hobbit, or Man, they would seem otherworldly. And I also get the same sense from that passage with Lindir. He seems to be a bit of an ass. :P And LaCE! Word!

Great piece, well researched, well thought through and soundly founded.
