I really like this. I'd have trouble defining exactly what makes a stanza of free verse poetry, but this unquestionably is -- something about the rhythm and balance of the lines is very effective. It's both sad and beautiful, and it feels in character for Gilraen. I'm also impressed by the way you make chilblains and midges seem poetic, or at least not out of place in a line of poetry!
Oh! I don't seem to have responded to this review, have I?
And I was so pleased about it! (But completely exhausted that day, I guess, so I plead that as an excuse!)

Oh, this is so sad. :( But beautifully written.
It was a very sad time for Gilraen--although I'm sure she appreciated the kindness and help that Elrond and his sons were offering her!
