Hobbit Names and Naming Conventions
Excellent essay, Dreamflower - I'd never realized the specific naming patterns in hobbit families, and how traditions differed between those families. Well-researched and interesting reading.
Author's Response:
Thank you! I'd known for a long time about the Brandybuck traditions-- but it wasn't until I started really looking that I saw he patterns in the other families. And knowing how JRRT was about languages and names, I cannot believe such patterns are accidental! It was a lot of fun to research!

Hobbit Names and Naming Conventions
Wow! This is so well done, thought-provoking and insightful, not to mention informative. I am fascinated by the wealth of information you've presented here, Dreamflower. I confess, the many naming traditions and rules are a lot to absorb, but your article goes a long way toward helping me to understand it all better, most especially the differences between the families. Goes to show us just how much work can go into choosing the right names for our OC's.
This was great, and a huge help to all of us hobbit writers, especially ones like myself who are a bit befuddled by the rules. Your essay makes it a lot easier to understand where it all came from! Well done!!
Author's Response:
Thank you! It's just what I hoped. The right hobbit name can sometimes make or break a story, so it's important that it *be* just right! The rules really are not that hard, but I think it will be useful to have them there all in one place, so to speak.
And also it was fun to figure all that out! *grin* I'm glad you liked it.

Hobbit Names and Naming Conventions
This was really intersting!
on: Took-Took as a surname... what on earth was going on there! I get Double-barrelled surnames (having one myself) but when it;s the same name... *hehe*
My brother spent 20 mins yesterday trying to convince me that Ianto (as in the welsh name) would be a great hobbit name... I wasn't convinced - but I didn't realise there were so many!
Author's Response:
Well, of course, he rejected it in the end. Many of the earliest drafts of the first chapter shows that initially the good Professor had a much lighter and more comic version of the ultimate story in mind. I suppose he thought "Took-Took" would be humorous! And of course it is, but a little *too* humorous for the story that came to be.
I can see "Ianto" as a hobbit name, easily! But not for a Bolger or a Brandybuck! *grin*
I'm glad you enjoyed it!
