Chapter 6

Loving this story so far!  It's very creative and charming and I can't wait to see how it ends. By the way, I'm really digging all the film-inspired tidbits, particularly the apparent Scottishness of Tooks.  I just about died reading about the Tookland Pipes. XD

Author's Response:

When it comes to characterization and events, I try to stick to book-verse; but when it comes to visual elements and "props" and the appearance of the characters, I confess to being very inspired by the movies.  While I'd always imagined Pippin as musically inclined, Billy Boyd's portrayal of him definitely reinforced that notion.  But in addition to that, I really love bagpipe music (and the bagpipes are an old instrument and found elsewhere in Europe than in Scotland).  So I didn't mind a bit getting the chance to have Pippin play that paricular instrument!  I am often inspired by Celtic music, and will sometimes imagine Pippin fiddling or piping when I listen to it, or sometimes imagine hobbits dancing to it.

However, you will never read an attempt at "dialect" when I write Pippin's dialogue.  I prefer to use straightforward language, and occasionally hint at his "Tookish accent" and allow the reader to imagine Billy's voice or not, as she may please.  I do the same with Merry, every now and then mentioning a "Buckland accent". But I don't try to "write" it that way.

Chapter 12

Jean has some beautiful poems pf her own.  Delightful!

Author's Response:

She does, and I hope to eventually have those here at MPTT!  When this story was being posted as a WIP over at SoA, she offered the songs to me for use in the story, and I was quick to take her up on that!  It was a very generous gesture!

Excellent transition.  Am glad Paladin sees the light now!

Author's Response:

Thank you!  Of course, it really took a third party to get through to the heart of the matter-- Pippin simply could not bring himself to speak of his fears aloud, especially to his father since they concerned him.  Like many people sometimes believe, Pippin feared that to speak of a thing might make it come true.  Fortunately Frodo was able to break through that, and expose it for the fallacy it was.  And it still took Frodo to mention it to Paladin, for I am not certain Pippin would have been able to actually articulate it to his father.

Chapter 10

At least he is wise enough to listen to Frodo.  Even as young as he is, relatively speaking, Frodo shows his name was well given.

Author's Response:

I think Frodo was always a fairly wise hobbit even in his youth, even though he was not Wise in the same sense that he became later.  More to the point, of course, he loves Pippin and he has an outsider's perspective on Pippin's relationship with his father.

And at this point, Paladin is going to listen to Frodo for that very reason. Of course, I felt the irony of it all as I wrote, since only three years later, Paladin will feel quite betrayed!  (Of course, without reason, though he's not to know that.)

Chapter 9

Interesting to see Noah's arc as part of this song!  Very nicely referenced and set.  Excellent chapter.

Author's Response:

Do you realize you are the first to find that reference?  I debated changing it as I changed some of the other words in order to make it more M-e friendly, but then felt that it was subtle enough to work for the story.  And of course, the story of Noah has its own M-e equivalent in the drowning of Numenor and Elendil's bringing the faithful to safety...

Caught!

Author's Response:

Yep! Busted!

(When I first replied to this one, I accidentally made it a review instead of a response! *facepalm*)

Chapter 7

A repetition of the last chapter?

Author's Response:

Uh-oh.  Looks like I will have to fix that!  Thank you! (Wonder how that happened?)

Aha!  Hopefully forewarned is indeed forearmed!  At least Frodo has an inkling as to what Pippin plans.  Seeing how Pippin handles the matter will be--entertaining!  Heh!

Author's Response:

Yes, and thankfully for poor Menelcar, who's been caught in the middle.  And a forewarned Frodo is definitely a forearmed Frodo!

Chapter 5

Oh, he'll stay put through the day, but slip out at night, will he?  Good for him!  Bad for his family, of course....

Author's Response:

Pippin's just at that age to split hairs and take advantage of technicalities...

Chapter 4

Love these poems and songs from so many different provences!  And Pippin's imagination has been caught....

Author's Response:

I know my imagination had been caught by the SCA song "The Life of a Bard".  Inspiration struck in 2004, when along with Marigold and her mother, we were evacuating the Coast from Hurricane Hugo.  (It was that experience that led me to *not* evacuate a year later, for Katrina) and I listened to the tape of SCA songs, and was suddenly struck by the image of a grinning young Pippin listening to it as well and being quite caught up by it!  It was with Marigold's encouragement that I began the story...

Chapter 3

It's been a while since I read "Nob o' the Lea" and it's well worth the reread!  Excellent!

Author's Response:

It was the first, and among my own favorites, of my hobbit song-- I've used it quite a few times!

Well, of COURSE Pippin's good!

Author's Response:

Of course he is. He may not realize just how good yet, but he's a very talented Took!

Chapter 1

Time to enjoy something else.  And here I've found a harp and more ribbons....

Heh!

Author's Response:

*grin* If we were allowd to search among our *OWN* stories, I'd have found just about everything right away, LOL! (I am still lacking three items...)
