Story Notes:

For B2MEM 2011, New Year's Day: She knelt on the floor, carefully picking up the shards of glass. Why did it have to be this one that broke?

Start a story with this two lines and answer the question of what was once broken. Or create a poem or piece of art that pictures this scene.

She knelt on the floor, carefully picking up the shards of glass. Why did it have to be this one that broke?  A shattered window was always bad, but if it had been part of the smial that was closed off, or at least didn’t face the lane…

Mr. Whitwell had been by and offered what he could.  It wasn’t enough.  Rosemary returned the money and said if Tom gave her a week’s worth, that’d pay.

It was a sad fate for the old Proudfoot hole, but it couldn’t be helped.  Tomorrow she’d head into town and look for oilcloth.
