Chapter 1: Chapter 1 "Season of Hope"

Not stalking, I promise, but when I find a new author whose work I really enjoy, I read everything I think I might like.

And again, you are bringing to life First Age characters that I have little knowledge of and have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know through your work.  I will have a much better appreciation of The Silmarillion when I tackle it again.

I know Gil-Gilad only as a dead king.  You have given him a three-dimensional character I'm coming to appreciate very much.  His strength of character, his empathy, his ability to *read* others ... all beautifully portrayed.

Wonderful read.

Chapter 1: Chapter 1

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh ... tears are pricking just now at the finish of this.  Your imagery throughout, of the valley's natural flora and fauna, of the rambling, shamgling house growing up on the banks of the Bruin, the word picture of Glorfindel glowing with the magic of the starlight - absolutely gorgeous.

What a fascinating picture, both of an emerging Rivendell and Glorfindel, you have painted in my mind.  I can't come up with a superlative that describes my awe of your description of the ritual for the naming and drawing forth of the power of the sword.  I wished I could have been in Erestor's formal robes watching and listening to it unfold.  But you did a excellent job of making me feel like I was almost there.

Really really beautiful.

Author's Response:

This story still surprises me. It started as a one line outline I scribbled one night - 'Glorfindel, naming a sword, Erestor watching from shadows' - and forgot about for months.  It must have been growing because when I started writing it was just 'there'.  I've written Glorfindel many times, but this was the first time I really felt I caught the voice in my head. Erestor was just himself :) This is such a wonderful review and being awkward with compliments I'm tempted to make stiff comments about how flattered I am, etc, but truly? Your words made me smile and lit up my evening. I am so glad you enjoyed it. Thank you  :)

Not sure I should mention it as it's not archived here, but I wrote a kind of prequel a few months later for a swap. It's about the growth of Imladris and how Erestor and Gil-galad met. If you'd like a link.... http://keiliss.livejournal.com/174581.html#cutid1

Chapter 1: Chapter 1

Mmmmmmmm ... I'm not much for First or Second Age stories, but this was lovely.  It would have taken a great deal of research for me to place, in the history of ME, the timing of Glorfindel's return, so I was doubly pleased to stumble across this story, because I've wondered for awhile now.

I loved the gentle essence of this, the peek at Erestor before I know him in Rivendell, the intriguing glimpse of Elrond in Gil-Galad's court, the capturing of the bond between the king and his senior librarian.  The underlying sensuality is beautifully woven into the story as well.

But what I enjoyed most was the conversation about why Glorfindel was returned and how he must feel.  I must go see if there is anything further in this story line.

Thoroughly enjoyed reading this!

Author's Response:

Heya Tanis. Sorry I'm slow with the thank yous, the past week's been chaos.

Thanks for the lovely review! I'm thrilled you liked this, it's one of my own favourites. I don't write Gil-galad and Erestor together anywhere near as often as I'd like. As for Glorfindel, I can't imagine what it must have been like to find himself in such a different land and try and move on, make a space for himself.  He must have felt very alone to begin with.

Heh, Tolkien played around with the possible date of Glorfindel's return as with so much else. Seems his most likely choice was Second Age shortly before the making of the Three and the One, but he also looked at later in the Second Age or even around  year 1000 of the Third Age (I've written quite a few fics using that date instead)

A/N:  This is a coming-of-age story with no factual basis in canon beyond the receiving of the tokens of the line of Isildur.  No characters have been significantly harmed in the writing of this story, but their canon may have been reintrepreted at bit in order to serve the purposes of the author.  If you are a canon Nazi, you will not appreciate the waste of your time; please employ your back key now.

This story was begin during the 2010 B2MEM challenges under the working title - Self-discovery.  It was just finished and will post here by chapters as its reedited.

Sighhhhh ... If you come back by here, Curious Wombat, my most since apologies.  I was trying to delete the author response - that didn't come through because I stupidly in IE and forgot that I have go to Firefox in order to be able to post here - and instead, deleted your lovely review.  My profuse apologies.  Me and technology are not best buds.

This is really the author reply to your note.  Yes, you did comment on this story, often and thoughtfully over at Faerie, which I much appreciated.  Thank you for leaving a note here too, and for the nomination!  I'm new enough out here for it to be a real thrill just to be nominated!

Chapter 1: The Tapestry

Ohhhhhhhh how lovely ... beautifully poignant foreshadowing here among the matchmaking minders of a little queen and her eventual suitor.  And a great snapshot of a handful of moments out of the lives of these ancient warriors and kings.  It really makes them live for me when I come across a gem like this that's so well written it draws me.

Author's Response:

I'm sitting here smiling - this is such a lovely review, Tanis.  These are people I've grown to love and writing about them is a pleasure, so when someone enjoys one of the stories, it makes me really happy.  Thank you so much *hug*
