I really liked this. It's beautifully and vividly written. It fits well with what the Silmarillion says about Nienna being Gandalf's teacher and that "those who listened to him awoke from despair and put away the imaginations of darkness." It also fits well with Gandalf's role as a bringer of hope in LOTR, such as his healing of Theoden.

This was an interesting essay. I agree with you that water is very significant in Tolkien. The part I found most thought-provoking was the difference between the Mirrormere and Galadriel's mirror as reflecting a difference in Dwarvish and Elvish natures, permanence and solidity vs. impermanence and mutability. That's something which hadn't occurred to me, so thank you for that thought!

Chapter 1: The Importance of Being Bilbo

Your affection for Bilbo is clear in this essay, and I agree he is a character who deserves it! That's an interesting point about the changes Bilbo goes through and his role between The Hobbit and LOTR. I have found it easier to write Elves and Men rather than Hobbits, but you've given me some things to think about.

Author's Response:

I'm so glad it gave you food for thought. Hobbits are unique beings in that they are wholly the invention of JRRT. He made modifications to Elves and Men to suit his tales, but hobbits he made up out of whole cloth. In the Third Age, at least, their traits made them far more important than the bigger folk of M-e could have ever expected.

I am totally fascinated an obsessed with hobbits, and with Bilbo and his kin most of all.

I liked how this shows Celegorm's feelings about the hunt -- it makes it seem like this is his craft or calling, as much as smithcraft or music are to his brothers. The story is light-hearted, but it contains hints of how Celegorm turns dangerous later. This was a fun read, and I like the explanation for how he got Huan.

I enjoyed this gapfiller. I really like the idea of Mardil being the one to plant the fruit -- just as he established the Ruling Stewards to keep the city until the King should return, so he planted the seed of the tree that would await Aragorn. Mardil's fear and grief are very convincing. It must have been a dark time for Gondor.

Chapter 1: All Shadows' Night

This is beautifully and poetically written. I enjoyed the depiction of Finduilas's strength and her struggle. I can well imagine her as the mother of both Boromir and Faramir.

The paragraph beginning "And I stab back hard" is powerful and made me shiver. It reminded me of Finrod's duel with Sauron in the Silmarillion.

Author's Response:

Oops, missed answering this review.

I never subscribed to the occasional fanfic depiction of Finduilas as a fragile flower, at least not in her soul.  She had to have had some mettle to have captivated Denethor and held his interest long enough that her death so badly affected him; and she comes from possibly the proudest Numenorean family in Gondor.  Her body might be starting to fail, but I dont see her surrendering without a fight.  And at this point, she would be strong enough to hold her own, spiritually, since she is not bound in Mordor or (like Finrod) Angband.

Thanks for commenting, Zdenka.
